| What does the word "MomCheck" mean? |
| MomCheck is not only the name of our company and our service, it is also a verb - we use it when asking the question, "Has it been MomChecked?" Every facility that is “MomChecked” is visited by one of our MomCheck Agents.
Our MomCheck Agents “shop” facilities, noting everything from the way childcare providers interact with children to the type of toys available for play. They ask questions ranging from supplies provided for each age group to discipline and potty training. MomCheck Agents spend around 90 minutes on a facility tour in order to provide you with the most complete information possible. |
| What is a MomCheck Report? |
| A MomCheck Report is the extensive form each MomCheck Agent fills out after shopping a facility. This report covers everything from staff ratios to mealtime, and also contains a written description of the facility - the sights, sounds and smells - to help paint a detailed picture of the facility.
These reports will help you to narrow your list of potential facilities without having to spend hours researching each one. We make your childcare search smarter so that you can focus on the facilities that best meet your needs. |
| What is a MomCheck Area? |
| We have divided the Dallas/Fort Worth area into overlapping "MomCheck Areas" to facilitate your searching. We realize that your search area might include multiple zip codes and/or cities, so the MomCheck Areas are designed to help broaden your search to logical geographic areas. If you are unsure of your exact location needs, we suggest searching by MomCheck Area first, as this will return the most results.

| What is a MomCheck Agent? |
| A MomCheck Agent is a mom who visits a childcare facility, acting as a mom who is interested in finding childcare. A MomCheck Agent never discloses her employment by MomCheck so that the information she receives from facility directors and staff is unbiased. |

| We are always looking for excellent potential MCAs. Just fill out a quick survey and we'll be in touch. |
| What kind of facilities does MomCheck shop? |
| MomCheck Agents shop licensed childcare centers only. We do not MomCheck in-home daycares, Mother's Day Out programs or preschools, although we will provide information about these types of facilities in the facility profile pages. |
| Does MomCheck shop all licensed childcare facilities? |
| Not at this time. There are over 2,000 licensed childcare facilities in the DFW area. Eventually, our goal is to visit each of these in person, but until then we are shopping facilities based on popular request and internal criteria. |
| How often are facilities MomChecked? |
| Our first goal is to get all facilities MomChecked. Once that is accomplished, we will strive to MomCheck each facility once every nine (9) months to ensure the information we provide to you is as accurate as possible. |
| Does MomCheck recommend or endorse certain childcare facilities? |
| We pride ourselves on providing an unbiased opinion on each facility. Therefore, we do not recommend or endorse particular facilities, nor do we accept advertising or funding from facilities. We hope our extensive information will give you the tools to determine whether or not the facility fits your specific needs before scheduling your own tour, but the decision is ultimately up to you. |

| Will MomCheck always be free? |
| Currently our revenue model is not subscription-based. That could change in the future, and we would give you plenty of advance notice.
|
| Some information you have in a childcare facility profile is wrong. How do I let you know? |
| Please use the Contact Us page to let us know - we'll verify the new information and update the facility profile. |
| What is a childcare facility? |
| A childcare facility is the correct terminology for, well, a daycare! ‘Childcare facility’ is often interchangeable with daycare, school, preschool, nursery, and a host of other names. To put it simply – any non-in-home business that makes its money by primarily caring for children (and is not a public school) is, at a basic level, a childcare facility and must be licensed by the state. After that distinction, many go into a specialized category, such as Mother’s Day Out (MDO) programs, Preschools, etc. By definition, still a childcare facility, but you will rarely hear them referred to as a ‘childcare facility.’ Confused yet? We know. It took us awhile to get it all straight, too. You can learn more about the different names & options by reading the MomCheck Guide to Childcare.
MomCheck provides a searchable database of every single licensed childcare facility in the DFW metroplex. We do not momcheck all of these, though. We limit our MomCheck Reports to just those facilities that offer full-time care (generally open before 8:00am and close after 5:00pm). If you’re looking for a Mother’s Day Out Program, a dedicated preschool, or an on-site afterschool program, you’ll still find them here, you just won’t find any MomCheck Reports. |
| Where do you get the information for the childcare facility profile? |
| The information is compiled from various sources such as details published on the internet by the facility, filed with the state, and direct communication with the facility. |
| What do the different types of childcare mean? |
Visit the MomCheck Guide to Types of Childcare for a more thorough explanation of some of these.
Montessori – A Montessori facility is in fact a school, and traditionally serves ages 3-12 (though there is a Montessori method for birth through 3). The emphasis is on learning through all five senses.
Pre-School –An early childhood program in which children focus on learning through play. The age range is most commonly three to five, with Preschool serving as the immediate predecessor to Kindergarten.
School Based – A childcare program that operates from an existing elementary school. This can include before and after school care, Head Start programs, and preschools.
Drop-in Care – A facility that provides for drop-in care with short notice. Traditional childcare facilities may offer this benefit with certain restrictions. Can also refer to a type of childcare facility that only offers drop-in care and usually operates 7 days a week.
Weekend Care A childcare facility that is open for any length of time on Saturdays and/or Sundays.
Faith-Based – A childcare program that centers around a particular faith or belief system. Most commonly associated with a particular church.
Mother’s Day Out (MDO) – A childcare program predominantly run by churches that offer a 2 or 3 day childcare program for children under 6 and follow the school year calendar.
Before/After School Program – A childcare program that provides care for school-age children before and after school.
Part-Time Care – A facility that allows for less than full-time care (5 days a week) at a discounted rate. Due to state licensing guidelines, usually not offered for infant care. (Please note – all facilities will allow for part-time care, but the rate may be equal to full-time care.) This designation is for childcare facilities whose rate structures reflect part-time care discounted rates.
Offers Get Well Care – A facility that offers care for mildly ill children.
|
| How do I find a facility that is open during the hours I need it? |
| In the search screen, enter the earliest drop-off time you need, and/or the latest pick-up time you need. It is better to enter only one of these values to increase the number of matching facilities.
If you do not get enough results, we suggest searching again and entering an earlier open time and/or a later close time, as those facilities will still meet your needs.
|
| What does the rate level mean? |
The weekly rate levels are based on specific price ranges of the weekly rates of the facility (click here for a printable chart). To use as a search criteria, select the level you wish narrow your range to.
If a facility falls into multiple rate levels, we have selected the higher rate level for search purposes. The chart does not include school age rates at this time. We will display a separate school age chart for the 2008/2009 school year. Please see individual facility details for further rate information. |
| How does MomCheck determine the rate level for a facility? |
| As part of the MomCheck due diligence, rates are checked for each facility by phone or e-mail on a semi-annual basis, and also during every in-person MomCheck Report. In an instance where MomCheck is not able to verify the rate for each range, we verify the rate for the lowest age range accepted. We place each facility in the appropriate rate level based upon the most recent information received.
This information is subject to change at anytime; therefore MomCheck advises you contact a facility directly for confirmation of current rates. To determine the actual $ rating given, we compare a facility’s rates with all others in the area and assign it accordingly, with the assumption that a rating of $$$ indicates the average rate range. Our current rate range spans are approximately $25-35 per week, as illustrated in the Infant Rate Table displayed on the Get Childcare search page.
There will always be facilities for which MomCheck could not verify any data. For the purpose of providing you with the greatest number of possible facilities in your search, any facility that does not have a particular rating will still appear in your search results with a Call notation in place of a rate level. |
| Why do some childcare facilities have rates listed as $1.00? |
| There are many childcare facilities that determine the rate based on a family's income in order to ensure affordability. Head Start programs are designed this way, and there are many more. As this results in different rates for different families, we have input the rates for these facilities as $1.00. |
| What is the Operation Number? |
| The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) assigns a unique Operation Number for each individual facility that is registered or licensed within the state. A facility’s number will only change if the facility begins operating under new ownership. Click Here to be taken to the DFPS website to learn more. |
| What does "Accepts Childcare Subsidies" mean? |
Childcare Subsidies refers to state assistance with childcare fees. Click Here for more information on the Texas Childcare Subsidy program. |

| How safe is it to search for childcare mostly over the Internet? |
| The internet is a great starting point in your childcare search. It's an ideal way to narrow your search to just a few centers from the hundreds existing in your area. That said, to ensure you and your child are as comfortable as possible with your choice of childcare, we encourage all parents to personally visit the facilities in which they are most interested. You should have the final word in your child's childcare selection. |
| What do you do with the information you collect? |
| We collect information for internal purposes only. We want to know who you are so that we can ensure our site meets your needs. We will never sell or share your information with an outside company. |
